Rueben Furlonge’s dedication to his business and promoting Montserrat is a well known taxi driver and tour guide. However, he is best known as Montserrat’s great goat water specialist, as described by the Montserrat Tourist Board (MTB), and has introduced this national dish to at least two regional events and many international journalist and media representatives.
Since 1992, Furlonge has been representing Montserrat at the Annual International Food Fair in Antigua and CARIFESTA, the Caribbean’s premiere cultural event.
The MTB’s newsletter featured Mr. Furlonge and his dedicated service to preserving Montserrat’s national dish.
The Tourist Board reports that Furlonge started making goat water in the 1970s for special occasions, and, because of its popularity, in 1987, he opened ‘Furlonge’s Den’ in the Harris’ village, then only sell this specialty on the weekend.
Since the eruption, Furlonge continues to operate but from his home in the northern safe zone of the island.
Montserrat’s national dish, goat water, is quite similar to Irish stew. It is a thick tasty stew with chunks of goat meat.
