Babylon was the great city of the ancient world. It was the capital of the kingdom of Babylonia and of Babylonia and of two Babylonian empires.

Babylon stood on the banks of the Euphrates River near the modern city of Al Hillah in Iraq. This location helped Babylon become an important trading post. The city also served as the religious centre of Babylonia; the word ‘Babylon’, means gate of the god.

Records first mention Babylon about 2200 BCE. King Sumuabum, the first important Babylonian ruler, founded a dynasty in 1894 BCE. The best-known king of that dynasty was Hammurabi, who ruled from 1792 to 1750 BCE and won fame from developing a wise and fair code of law.

Fact File: The period from 5000 to 500 BCE was an age of crucial new technologies — the wheel, metal tools and weapons were developed at this time. Coins were first used, and writing and mathematics developed. Babylonians also began to study the stars.
