On Friday, the 13th of March 2009, Montserrat hosted the Martin Healy Band from Dublin in Ireland, who participated in the country’s annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations for the third year in a row.
The Martin Healy Band performed at the St. Patrick’s Dinner on March 14th and joined the Emerald Community Singers at the Irish Cabaret on March 16th. Both of these events were hosted at Montserrat’s Cultural Centre.
The band continued on to other various locations throughout the island, some included a range of beach bars and restaurants.
The Irish band makes its way to Montserrat each year by fundraising. According to the Emerald Community Singer’s press release, “The band have fundraised their way to Montserrat with the help of a grant from Culture Ireland. Their music is a mixture of instrumentals, traditional Irish folk songs of the sea, and stories in song of the Irish troubles.”
Members of the Martin Healy Band include Andrew Healy, George Kenny, Gerard Murray, Thomas Phelan, and Martin Healy, himself.
