On 25 December 2008, the Government of Montserrat announced it has secured an improved transportation arrangement and the reintroduction of a ferry service.
Taking effect on 1 December 2008, WinAir resumed its 19-seater twin otter service for flights between Antigua and Montserrat. The Government says, “Under this new arrangement, there will be four (4) flights scheduled daily.”
The Government’s Press Officer reports, “Furthermore, with the assistance of the Department for International Development (DFID), the Government of Montserrat has put in place the necessary arrangements for the reintroduction of a ferry service, which will be based in Montserrat.”
Montserrat’s Government reveals that the ferry service will commence plying the Montserrat/Antiqua route on 11 December 2008.
From 11 – 31 December 2008, the prophesied ferry will provide “one return trip sex (6) days per week (excluding Sunday). The ferry will depart at 7:30am and leave Antigua at 5:30p.m. each day.”
However, Montserrat’s Government reveals that additional sailing may be arranged as required.
“Passengers who cannot be accommodated through WINAIR’s reservation system, and others wishing to use the ferry service, should contact local travel agents MONAIR at (664) 491-2533/2362 or Carib World Travel in Antigua at (268) 480-2999. The ferry service will make two return trips, four days a week.”
Reports dictate that a return trip is $350EC, and one way trip is $200EC. However, special day return packages can be arranged through day tour operators. The Government of Montserrat is thankful to DFID for its role in making the ferry service possible through the provision of additional budgeting aid.
