Instead of participating in and witnessing the kind of history that makes the world sit up and pay attention, Montserrat lost a golden opportunity to replace its name on the map, when Susan Chaplin failed to make her scheduled 28 mile trip from Montserrat to Nevis by paddle board.

Late last year, Ms. Chaplin paddled for 12 hours. On October 24, she touched down on Montserrat’s south-east coastline of ‘Shoe Rock’.

The paddle boarder’s plans were to attempt a voyage between Montserrat and Nevis. Unfortunately, without her paddle board, this scheduled voyage would be impossible. Hence, on her arrival September 16th of this year, Susan had no choice but to abandon her planned voyage and opted to discover the island for 12 days.

Although Susan provided various air services and freight companies with the exact measurements and received an okay in return, she was not successful in finding a freight or air service to Montserrat that could accommodate her paddle board.

In spite of Susan Chaplin training for almost five months in preparation of this voyage, she had to resort to spending her time discovering the things about Montserrat that make it so special.

Incidents of mishaps and misfortunes when traveling to Montserrat are increasing. Residents are questioning why the Government of Montserrat allowed Montserrat Airways, a service of Montserratian origin, to fail in its first year.

However, reports indicate that WinAir claims to be expanding its operations in the region. It added Montserrat and Antigua to its route as of October 1st.

Aware of the fact that there are complaints about its transportation services, and these complaints are increasing, residents of the island will have to accept WinAir’s current limited air service over no service at all.
