On May 15th, the Hugh Lawson Shearer Trade Union Education Institute conducted a public lecture and workshop through Montserrat’s University of the West Indies School of Continuing Studies that aimed to provide an assessment of the way in which globalisation impacts women.
Dr. Judith Soares, who heads the Women and Development Unit in Barbados, presented the public lecture entitled, “Forever Indebted to Women: Union Women Confronting Globalisation”. This was the fifth in a regional lecture series organized by the Hugh Lawson Shearer Trade Union Education Institute.
The aim of this public lecture was to provide an assessment of the way in which globalisation impacts women, particularly trade women. The public lecture also provided a method of exploration of the ways in which these women have been responding to this social and economic phenomenon in a period when trade unions are being weakened and marginalized in the process of production, distribution, and exchange.
This public lecture was another in a series of activities to mark the 60th anniversary of the University of the West Indies.
An all day workshop that was sponsored by the department of Labour was conducted at the conclusion of the lecture.
