On March 8th, the normally tranquil island of Montserrat bustled with people from near and afar anticipating the landing of the Royal couple, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Although while in the Royal Navy, Prince Charles did visit Montserrat. According to the local Media Centre at the DMCA, the Prince of Wales did not leave the ship docked in Montserrat’s waters many years ago. Hence, history was made on March 8th, when the Royal couple docked a little after 10am.

After visiting Trinidad and Tobago and St. Lucia, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall made their first Royal landing in Montserrat.

According to Clarence House in London, the objective of the Royal couple’s tour of the Caribbean was to reinforce Britain’s ties with important Commonwealth countries that included Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia, Jamaica, and the UK Oversea’s Territory of Montserrat. It is expected to advance key British Government priorities in the promotion of sustainable development, environmental protection and youth opportunity.

The 2,000-ton LeanderThe Royal couple arrived in Montserrat’s secluded harbor on schedule in the 2,000 ton Leander, famous for its ceiling to floor mural of classic sailing ships. The Royal couple and accompanying entourage stayed aboard the vessel in an avid effort to reduce expenses attributed to this Caribbean tour.

According to the published press strategy, there were two major issues surrounding this visit, the first was how to gain maximum exposure for Montserrat from the visit, and the second was to look at security issues with a large press corps present.

However, as it turns out, security was not an issue in the tiny peaceful country of Montserrat, and international media did arrive on island as anticipated. They were badged and briefed at the Media Centre and granted access to accompany the Royal couple on their first tour of Montserrat. The Royal tour included a visit to the newly construct market in Little Bay, the exclusion zone in the southern part of the country, and finally a reception at the Cultural Center.

The Royal couple accepted flowers presented by school children and greeted the congregated public with comfortable and confident smiles.

The Royal couple was well received and many residents expressed the hope that they would frequent the island and increase their assistance with the Montserrat’s ongoing crisis.
